Will Miller has been Chairman and CEO of Irwin Financial Corporation since 1990. He is the great-great-grandson of Joseph Ireland Irwin, the founder of Irwin's Bank, out of which Irwin Financial has grown. In 1990, he purchased from other family members rights to their ownership in the company and joined the management team full time.
Will's association with the company, however, dates back to 1985, when he became a member of the board of directors of Irwin Union Corporation, as the company was known then. At that time, Will was President of Irwin Management Company, a family investment office (which is not affiliated with Irwin Financial or Irwin Union). Irwin Management and its affiliates were involved in investment management, real estate development, venture capital, and philanthropy.
Prior to joining his family's investment firm in 1984, Will's business background ranged from working as a foreman on the assembly line of a diesel engine plant in Charleston, South Carolina, to being an associate in the New York City venture capital firm of E. M. Warburg Pincus & Co. He was educated at Yale University, where he received a BA in English, and earned a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford.
Will serves on the boards of Cummins Inc., New Perspective Fund/EuroPacific Growth Fund/New World Fund, Irwin Management Company, and Tipton Lakes Company. His service on not-for-profit boards currently includes The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (Chicago), Cummins Foundation, Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation (Columbus, IN), and The Heritage Fund (Columbus, IN). He is a Trustee of Yale University (New Haven, CT) and a member of the Yale University Investment Committee.
